Vinca - also called "Periwinkle" Catharanthus roseus
Native to:
India and Madagascar
Hardiness:
Half-hardy annual under the British System.
Seed Count:
780 seeds per gram (1.282g/Ms).
Germination:
Germinate at 21 to 24?C (70 to 75?F). Do not cover seed as light aids germination. Keep seed flat uniformly moist but not too wet as Vincas are sensitive to excess moisture. Germinates in 2 to 3 weeks.
Description:
Home gardeners should start seed indoors 8 weeks before last frost. Professional growers need to allow about 10 weeks from sowing until flats are in flower. Plants must be grown at 16?C (60?F) or warmer for the first 3 weeks after transplanting. Excellent for full sun or partial shade, Vincas have few pest or disease problems and will flower all summer long. Heat, drought and salt spray tolerant. One of our favorite annuals. Full sun.
Heatwave Series
Heatwaves have been bred to suit most all growers. They possess the habit of a pack performing vinca, yet also have a flower size that rivals that of some of the largest in the industry. Earlier to bloom than a Cooler and most all of the Pacificas, Heatwaves are a solid choice. Finish in packs, pots, or combos. Excellent in the garden. Full sun. Garden height: 30 cm (12 in.)
Little Series
Upright, branching plants that are great for borders and mass plantings. Very popular series for bedding plant sales in packs and pots. Garden height: 25 cm (10 in.)
Vinca Rosea Series
5760 Tall Deluxe Mix (Rosea Mix)
Especially good for background plantings, taller than the Little Series. Bright mix of white, pink and rose shades. Widely used by packet seed companies. Garden height: 45 cm (18 in.)
