1. American Marigolds:
Tagetes erecta
Sometimes called “African Marigolds.” From the very dwarf Discovery™ Series to the very tall plants of the Gold Coins™ Series, the flowers range from 6 to 13cm (2-1/2 to 5in.) across. Solid colors only, there are no bicolors nor reds. Some are sensitive to day length and require short days for early initation of flower buds. Professional growers must sow seed early or provide 21 artificial short days from sowing using black cloth (cover 5:00 PM, remove cover 8:00AM) to bring these Marigolds into bloom at a compact height. Under short days, sowing until flower takes about 10 to 12 weeks, depending on the variety. Excellent for cutting, the Jubilee and Gold Coin Series F1 are a popular choice for commercial cut flower growers.
2. French Marigolds
Tagetes patula
Dwarf varieties with single to fully double flowers, ranging from 2.5 to 6.5cm (1 to 2.5in.) in diameter. Slightly sensitive to day length (only 2 to 10 days reduction in flowering time), short days will result in more compact plants. They will bloom about 40 to 60 days after sowing and will flower throughout the season. Very popular for bedding plant sales while bloom in flats and small pots.
